India’s sports market is experiencing rapid growth, driven by increasing health awareness, digital transformation and government initiatives, projecting to reach ($6.6 billion) by 2027 in sports goods and ($100 billion) in five years in sports business, with a 15% annual growth in sports management becoming Asia’s top producer of sporting goods. Key sports leagues have seen significant growth, including cricket generating (₹7,000 crore) in revenue and (60 crore) viewers, Celebrity Cricket League with 15 crore viewers and (₹50 crore) advertising revenue, Women’s Premier League with (₹260 crore revenue) and 18 crore viewers, badminton with (₹325 crore) revenue and 300 million viewers, football with (₹300 crore) revenue and 300 million viewers, hockey with (₹420 crore) revenue and more than 500 million viewers, tennis with (₹250 crore) revenue and 10 million players and kabaddi with 226 million viewers and significant revenue growth. Government support includes (₹17 billion) allocated for sports development in FY 2025, promoting infrastructure development, sponsorship, and viewership growth, making India’s sports ecosystem attractive to investors, sponsors and global sports organizations. Regional games in league formats have been successful in attracting rural viewership. Additionally, initiatives like Khelo India, Fit India and the National Sports Development Fund boost grassroots participation, talent identification and sports infrastructure. India’s hosting of international events like the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup and 2023 Cricket World Cup further establishes its credibility.
